The Trump phenomenon's most revealing and characteristic occasions – not its most significant, nor cruelest, nor most threatening, nor most senseless, but possibly its most revealing – occurred earlier this fall. In the course of a few weeks, the American president began displaying all observers his intentions for a gilded ballroom two times larger compared to the White House and then began solo dismantling the East Wing portion to construct it.
He has committed acts countless times more severe – the present calculation of casualties due to his slashing to USAID stands at 600,000 and rising, and this week research forecast his fossil fuel policies would result in fatalities 1.3 million more. Yet nothing as characteristic. No former leader would have attempted – really, no other president would have imagined – unilaterally destroying significant portions of the executive mansion to build a Versailles-style party room, with the enthusiastic participation of multiple America's wealthiest, the majority of whom have business with federal agencies.
We transitioned from 'the humble will receive the planet' toward 'the meek shall die of cholera'
As disorienting as it is to observe the president attempt to overturn the old idea regarding democracy and substitute it with its direct contrary, there is one large group within America who wouldn't consider it completely novel. This includes individuals like us – in older age cohorts close to half – who were raised as conventional Protestant believers.
We have observed throughout the years as politically conservative religious groups turned the Jesus we were raised with into the complete reverse of who we understood him to be. Essentially, they converted a persona of compassion into a figure of animosity who approves precisely the cruelties that he criticized in biblical teachings; this has happened at a slower pace, over decades instead of months, yet it remains unsettling in the same ways, a bewildering emotional blow for many of us.
A Harmful Christianity Takes Hold
So let me first describe the Christ that I grew up with, because theoretically Jesus is the center of any Christian faith, and given that the rapidly expanding group of Americans might have little sense regarding him since they are atheists or agnostics or spiritual independents. I raise no objection with these various perspectives, nor with any other faith; however I believe that exist valuable insights of great price within Christian narrative.
It is emphatically not the account of a mighty king arising; conversely, an infant arrives to displaced parents in an automotive shelter, who are forced to hastily depart to a foreign land to avoid undercover officers. The infant develops in modest conditions, a working carpenter; his teaching focuses on affection for others, specifically for the impoverished – and not a sentimental love, but practical compassion, demonstrated through nourishing and protecting. The Savior's reaction to hostility is to offer the opposite cheek – not as an act of submissive tolerance, but as a method to teach the assailant; his approach to wrongdoing is that if an individual takes your jacket you should give the person your additional clothing too.
The apparent and direct fact that the Jesus in biblical accounts requests a type of radical love centered on the impoverished is what has always made Christianity somewhat of a controversial faith: appealing to the masses, but owing to its intrinsic extremism demanding to be contained. In the 1950s it was restrained through watering down – The Protestant faith was so prevalent that it practically sanctified existing conditions.
A Struggle for the Best Within Us
Therefore I have felt heartened to see the persistent defiance to Trump emerge in this past year. It has provided significant comfort to assist in constructing the movement that has protested openly via continuous gatherings, and likely has encouraged citizens to show up in large quantities in interim political contests. We will need to maintain it, and through comparable resolve, displaying national flags during all protests and appeals to the best parts within national heritage.

The country is optimally secured, in other words, through connection to the finest within national tradition, similar to Christianity is optimally secured by reference to elements that cause it to be unique and wonderful, specifically the model of Christ. In both situations does it mean acting as if the most negative about the nation and Christian faith was nonexistent; it means both meekness and faith, a mixture that serious US believers should be comfortable with.
