Matteo Cancellieri Demonstrates Glimpses of Brilliance in Bright Spot for Unstable Lazio

The mood at the Stadio Olimpico was far from happy during the weekend fixture. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, an opponent that had let in a total of 10 goals while netting just two in their previous five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their most recent demonstration in a continuous dispute with president Claudio Lotito.

A Season Falling Apart?

Was the team's progress coming unstitched, or did there exist a binding element maintaining its structure in the first place? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri to lead the team this summer, but then he admitted that the board had not mentioned the transfer ban they were set to be hit with for financial irregularities. Rumours that he could resign were not true, but he stated that Lotito had "swindled" him.

The Biancocelesti were just as chaotic on the pitch as behind the scenes, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the rest of their opening fixtures, which included the capital clash. At any given moment, it has been hard to determine if they're getting better or imploding.

Matteo's Surprising Return

At least one man continued to smile amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to remain with Lazio this year. He was on the previous campaign on loan at Parma and, at the start of the off-season, his owning club were pushing for him to extend his stay a while longer. The registration embargo forced a rethink. The club couldn't risk to reduce their roster without replacements.

He signed initially during Sarri's previous tenure, back then just 20 years old product of Verona's academy. He made 20 Serie A appearances with the club in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those as a substitute. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended following that term, later stated Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential then never playing him."

Uncovering His Natural Fit

It's possible the coach was still trying to work out the nature of Cancellieri's abilities. Billed as a flank player on arrival, Cancellieri instead found himself much of that season as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile at No 9. In 63 appearances while playing for Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
